Movieversity
An empty soundstage at night. A single bare bulb on a stand, the ghost light, glows in the middle of a worn wooden floor beside an empty director's chair and a vintage film camera on a wooden tripod. Colored tape marks dot the floor.

An academy of film craft · for the age of AI tools

The tools change.
The grammar doesn't.

Anyone can generate a shot now. Hardly anyone is taught what to do with it. Movieversity teaches the enduring craft: where the camera goes, when to cut, how a frame carries a feeling. So whatever you pick up next, a phone, a cinema camera or a prompt box, the movie is still yours.

Craft over tools

Slop is what you get when the machine makes every decision. Pretty frames, no geography, no reason to cut, nothing at stake.

Craft is the hundred small choices underneath: why this lens, why now, why her face and not the letter, why hold one beat longer than is comfortable.

We teach the choices. The tools will be different next year. The between two actors has been the same since the 1910s.

Lesson zero · the cutting room

Cut the scene: The Letter

Four beats. One woman. One envelope that changes everything. Pick a shot for each beat, then screen your cut and get notes from the instructor. There's more than one good answer. That's the whole point.

The enduring tools

Eight modules. None of them is about a particular app. All of them make every app better.

  1. 01

    Film grammar

Shot sizes, eyelines, the cut that makes two images into one idea.

  2. 02

    Composition

Where the eye lands first, and how to make it land there on purpose.

  3. 03

    Camera & lens

Why a 24mm feels anxious and an 85mm feels like a secret.

  4. 04

    Light

Motivated sources, contrast as mood, and why darkness is a color.

  5. 05

    Blocking

Moving people through space so the staging tells the story without words.

  6. 06

    The cut

Rhythm, the held beat, cutting on action, and the edit as a second draft.

  7. 07

    Sound

Half the picture. Room tone, the off-screen world, silence as a weapon.

  8. 08

    Story under the scene

Want, obstacle, turn. If nothing changes, it isn't a scene yet.

Running through every module: how to direct AI image and video tools like a crew, not a slot machine. Shot lists before prompts. Coverage before generation. Your taste as the final cut.

A vintage film cutting room seen from above: a wooden editing table with two metal film reels, strips of film hanging from clips over a canvas trim bin, a red grease pencil, a white cotton glove, a metal splicer, a desk lamp and a mug of coffee.

The cutting room is open late

Before timelines there were reels, bins and a pencil. The lessons from that room still hold, and they hold even harder when a machine can hand you ten thousand frames an hour.
